Are you being you in business? Think about it for a minute. Most businesses spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out how to be just like someone else. Is this you? In this day and age it is critical to set yourself apart from all the noise on the internet…especially for creative businesses. Simply put, if you are not standing out, you are blending in! That's not good. It certainly isn't going to capture anyone's attention.
So how does one be unique and stand out? It's really simple if you think about it…just be YOU. After all, you are uniquely you. There isn't a single person on the planet that is a carbon copy of you. In the immortal words of Judy Garland, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else." These, my friends, are words to live by…
When we talk about being ourselves in business, what does that mean? First of all, it means…stop trying to be just like the next guy. Sounds easy enough, but think about when you started your first blog or website. What did you do? If you were anything like me, you began to do endless research. You checked out other websites, looked at other companies business models, compared different product modules. In the overall scheme of things, it seems like a very good idea. Who doesn't want to start out on such a new journey without being well informed or educated?
However, often times what happens is that we begin to feel like we aren't good enough. We get caught in the trap of comparing. The worst possible thing we can do in business is compare someone else's end to our beginning. You cannot forget that the websites and business owners we come to admire started out just as we have….with an idea. The only difference between the two is time…and the effort it takes to make a business work.
It may sound selfish, but as a business owner, you have to think about who YOU are first. Trying to be all no-nonsense and fact based when you are a free spirited, spiritual person just won't work….and it will NOT translate to your audience. So let me ask you…who are you? Do you know? I can't answer that for you. The fun part is figuring that out for yourself.
Don't worry. You are not alone! There are a lot of people who really have no idea who they are deep down. They are so busy trying to be someone else, that they have hidden their true self away somewhere. If you are that person, then I have some homework for you to do before your proceed with taking the next steps in your business. Think of this as an investment. The most lucrative one you will ever make. Discover who you are…and then the rest will come.
Here are some things to think about:
- Define who you are according to you. What makes you tick?
- Let go of the past! That's over. This moment, right now, is a brand new time.
- Be real. Until you are open and honest with yourself, you can't be any good to anyone else.
- It's none of your business what other people think about you! There will always be "haters" who have something to say or an opinion, but don't let that noise in…it will only clutter your path. If you are being genuine, then no one can take that away from you.
- Treat yourself with the same respect and gratitude that you would others.
- When you learn how to take care of you…and only then…you will be able to take care of others.
Let me leave you with this:
"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are." -e.e. cummings
So, what will you do to ensure you are being uniquely you in business?
